Roughly equidistant between the towns of Uzès and Avignon is the petite ville of Estézargues, home to the most avant-garde co-operative in France. Your typical co-op is a collective of local grape growers whose fruit is combined to make general wines. Les Vignerons d’Estézargues have a radically different method; they vinify separately and create their own special cuvées. The result is a spectrum of some of the tastiest, best value wines anywhere.
What’s more, the co-op takes a ‘natural’ approach to winemaking, sparing its wines any chemical treatments and adding the smallest possible amount of sulphur. Yields are low and the wine is bottled unfiltered, which all contributes to the huge amount of flavour in this traditional Rhône blend of grapes.
Flavours: A hazy, deep purple hue gives way to elegant blackberry and raspberry flavours, spicy black pepper and garrigue herbs such as rosemary and thyme
Victuals: Game terrine, pheasant, partridge or a rich, meaty stew and grilled vegetables
